6 court instructions for hiring domestic workers

Dhaka: The court has issued 7-point precautionary instructions when hiring domestic workers. The court issued the directive on Sunday (October 4) after observing the verdict in the case of former Eden College principal Mahfuza Chowdhury Parveen.

Rita Akhter alias Swapna and Ruma alias Reshma, two maids from the deceased’s house, were sentenced to death by the verdict Judge Abu Zafar Md. Kamruzzaman.

After the verdict, the court sentenced each of them to seven years in prison and a fine of Taka 25,000 for stealing household items and another six months in prison for non-payment. The two defendants were standing on the bench crying as the verdict was announced.

The court called the murder of the housewife at the hands of the maid heinous and cruel. The murder of one of the pioneers of women’s education has deprived her family and her country of many services. The court also gave 6-point instructions to avoid such cruel incidents.

The guidelines are: First, the housekeeper must be monitored for at least 90 days after hiring a new housekeeper. If they do something wrong, they should report it to the nearest police station or social services officer without hitting them. Second, in case of hiring a domestic worker, it is necessary to keep detailed information, a photograph and a copy of the DNI. A copy should be sent to the nearest police station. Third, if there is no CCTV camera at the front door of the house, the camera must be installed. Fourth, when a domestic worker is hired through another domestic employee, the details of the person through whom the domestic employee is recruited must also be retained and sent to the police station. Fifth, when hiring a domestic worker through a provider organization, information about that organization must also be retained. If the organization is not licensed, it must be reported to the corresponding police station. Sixth, the domestic worker supply company must also keep a photograph of the domestic worker and deliver a copy to the appropriate police station.

Mahfuza Chowdhury was killed on February 10, 2019 at her home on Elephant Road in the capital. Ismat Qadir, the husband of the deceased, filed a lawsuit against Gamma.

Mahfuza Chowdhury was Principal of Eden College from 2009 to 2012. Her husband Ismat Qadir Gama is a freedom fighter.
