Narayanganj Police Superintendent Mohammad Zaidul Alam said the incident took place at the Baitus Salat Jame mosque in the West Talla area of Sadar Upazila after Esha prayers on Friday night.
He told bdnews24.com that many people were offering sunnat prayers after the obligatory Esha prayers at night when the mosque exploded with a loud noise.
Of the burn victims, 37 have been sent to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. Imam Abdul Malek (60) and Muazzin Delwar Hossain (50) of the Baitus Salat Jame mosque are also among the 36 people.
Samanta Lal Sen, coordinator of the institute, said that the condition of almost all those admitted was “alarming”.
At least 40 people were burned when an air conditioner exploded at the Baitus Salat Jame mosque in the Paschimatalla area of Narayanganj Sadar Upazila on Friday night after Esha prayers.
Citing the locals, Fatullah Police Inspector Shafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com that more than 50 people were praying inside the mosque at the time of the incident.

A witness, Mohammad Rony, said that he had seen many people rolling outside the mosque with their bodies burned. Local residents and fire service personnel arranged for them to be sent to the hospital.
Upon receiving the news, Deputy Commissioner Jasim Uddin and Police Superintendent Zaidul Alam, along with senior RAB officers and the police, rushed to the scene.
In the house near the mosque, several people have complained that there was a ‘leak’ in the gas pipeline in the area for a long time. They said they doubted anything had happened due to the gas inside the mosque.
