Each of the five mango orchard owners in the Khord Bausa de Bagha upazila area of Rajshahi are paid Tk 3.13,000 for renting a bird’s nest.
On Saturday (November 21) morning, forestry officials visited the garden. The owners of the orchards have informed that the money will be given to them.
The owners of the five assigned gardens are Manjur Rahman, Sanar Uddin, Shahadat Hossain, Shafiqul Islam and Faruk Anwar from the village of Khord Bausa.
According to the Forest Department, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change will hand over the allocation to the Forest Department on November 1 as compensation to mango growers for snail nesting in the mango orchard in Khord Bausa village.
Mihir Kumar, Forest Curator, Dhaka Wildlife and Nature Conservation Area, Zillur Rahman, Rajshahi Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Mehedizzaman, Assistant Forest Curator, Rajshahi Department of Social Forests, Rahat Hossain, Conservation Officer from Wildlife and Biodiversity visited the garden on Saturday morning. Ranger Helim Raihan and Wildlife Inspector Jahangir Kabir. At that time they exchanged views with the owner of the garden and the local people.
Officials said the money would be delivered to the orchard owners through the local Upazila Nirbahi (UN) official within days.
The snails have been found to nest in the garden of Bausa village in Baghar for four years. They arrive at the end of the monsoon season and leave when winter begins and the baby learns to fly. This time too, millions of birds have been born there. The children have not yet learned to fly.
Meanwhile, gardening for birds has been disrupted for the past two years due to bird nesting. As a result, the garden owners complained that mango production has declined.
Some local bird watchers said to wait a bit after a tree house was demolished last year. At one point he sat down in a meeting on the subject. Tenant Ataur Rahman gave an ‘ultimatum’ that he would scare the birds away if they did not leave within 15 days.
When the news in this regard was published in the media, a lawyer asked the court to make the necessary order. At the end of the hearing, the court ordered that the bird’s nest in the garden not be broken in any way. At the same time that he determined the possible damage to the owner of the garden, he ordered the Deputy Commissioner and UNO to present it in the form of a report.
