Clashes broke out overnight in a city in Nangarhar province during peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban insurgents in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Thousands of people have died in two decades of bloody conflict in Afghanistan. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced. This is the first time that the Taliban have engaged in face-to-face talks with the country’s elected government to establish peace. Their historic peace talks began in Doha, the capital of Qatar, last Saturday. In addition to ending the two-decade war, the issue of women’s rights has also been debated.
Clashes broke out between the two sides in Nangahar province on Wednesday night amid those peace talks. “We have not been attacked,” said Afghan Defense Minister Asadullah Khalid. The enemy has continued to attack and the bloodshed of Afghan civilians continues.
Ataullah Khojianis, a spokesman for the Nangahar provincial government, said 11 members of the security forces and eight pro-government fighters had been killed in the clashes in the Khojiani district. He claimed that at least 30 members of the Taliban had been killed in the clashes.
