Patgram OC Sumon Kumar Mohant Police Station said three cases, including one murder case, have been filed in connection with the burning of the body of a man named Jewel. Five more defendants were arrested in these cases on Sunday (November 1). Among them is Jubed Ali, caretaker of the Burimari Central Jame Mosque, in a murder case. However, a total of ten defendants have been arrested so far, but five have been handed over to court.
It is worth mentioning that last Thursday (October 29) Lal Yunus Md. Joya Shahidunnabi. However, due to mental problems, all the faithful left the mosque, but he stayed with a friend. When the servant found him and took him away, he began to search the mosque. At that time, some people came from outside the mosque and started beating Jewel, accusing him of insulting the Quran. When he informed the local president of this news, he asked him to call a member since he was away. After that, a member came and beat Jewel and her friend and took them to the Burimari Union Parishad, but by then the incident had spread through various outlets, including Facebook, phone, and word of mouth. As a result, people began to arrive from everywhere. They broke down the union council door and took Jewel and her companion away. Upon learning of the matter, the local UNO, the OC and the Upazila president went to the scene but were only able to rescue Jewel’s partner. They were also chased by a mad mob as they tried to rescue Jewel. After that, 19 rounds of empty shots could not be stopped. Claiming blasphemy against the Quran based on conjecture, all the others blindly believed and fabricated various rumors and beat Jewel to death. He then set his motorcycle on fire and threw his body into the fire. After the fire, only four bones were recovered from Jewel’s body. Investigations by intelligence agencies and human rights groups later revealed that there had been no incidents of desecration of the Quran.
