4 killed in clashes in Hathazari

Four people were killed in clashes between Hifazat-e-Islam activists and the police during a protest rally in Chittagong’s Hathazari. Among the dead were three students from the madrassa and a pedestrian. The bodies of the four are found in the emergency department of Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

ASI Alauddin Talukder from the Chittagong Medical College Hospital Police Post confirmed the information to Jago News around 4:30 pm.

The deceased were identified as Merajul Islam, Rabiul Islam and Jahangir Alam. However, the name of the deceased has yet to be confirmed.

Following prayers on Friday, Hifazat leaders and activists started a procession from Darul Uloom Moinul Islam Madrasa and several nearby mosques to protest the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bangladesh.

Witnesses said clashes with the police broke out when they tried to march towards the Hathazari police station. The protesters threw stones at the police. The police first tried to disperse them by launching tear gas projectiles. At one point, the police fired rubber bullets. When the confrontation escalated, the police opened fire.

The confrontation between the two sides lasted more than an hour.

Hathazari Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam said: “Hifazat supporters try to hold a procession to protest the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bangladesh. When the police arrested them, they entered the Hathazari Police Station and carried out acts of vandalism. When the police took up position on the road during the confrontation, the followers of Hathazari Madrasa threw bricks at the position.

Mir Idris, Hefazat’s co-organizing secretary, claimed that the police had shot dead at least six students.
