The Nigerian army has rescued 344 students abducted last week from a school in the northwestern state of Katsina.
Citing state officials, CNN reported on Friday.
Last Friday, unidentified gunmen entered the Government Science High School in Kankara, Katsina State, and abducted the students. The next day, 200 students returned, CNN reported.
Later on Thursday night, the Nigerian army rescued 344 more people. They were handed over to the state governor, Aminu Belo Masari, said the governor’s spokesman, Abdu Labran.
However, he said that the militant group Boko Haram was not involved in the kidnapping. On the contrary, he said that the thieves may have done this under the guise of Islamic terrorists.
CNN, however, could not verify his statement.
“This is a great relief for the whole country and the international stage,” Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said on Twitter after the rescue of the students.
He called on people to be patient even in the face of strong criticism of the country’s continuing security problems.
“Our administration is fully aware of the responsibility we have to protect the lives and property of Nigerians,” he said. We have to face the challenges of security, the economy and corruption. Nigerians must be patient and fair with us.
However, in a video posted Thursday, some of the rescued students mentioned Boko Haram.
The video shows tired children sitting under a tree. In it you can hear a voice. It is alleged that the ambassador provided the information to Hussein.
President Masari confirmed to CNN on Thursday that the children in the video were kidnapped students. However, he did not agree to accept the voice as Shekaur.
