Police have recovered the decapitated bodies of three members of the same family from a jungle in a tribal area of the Indian state of Jharkhand. After recovering the bodies on Wednesday, police say the family was abducted about three weeks ago on charges of practicing black magic. They were later beheaded at some point. Their heads were recovered from a separate location. Three villagers have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the incident. Birsha Munda, 48, his wife Sukru Purti, 43, and their daughter Somwar Purti, 20, disappeared from Kuda village in the Khunti district of Jharkhand on October 8. Telani, the family’s married daughter, filed a complaint with the Psycho Police station on October 12 alleging that she could not find her parents and younger sister, police said.
Telani said she came to visit her father’s home on October 8 with her husband. But seeing the closed door, I think there is no one home. After searching all the neighbors but they couldn’t say anything. He filed a complaint with the police after searching all possible places. He alleged that some villagers may have kidnapped the three due to a dispute over the land.
Police said a search was launched with a squad of dogs to search for the three, but no one was initially found. Later, three of the nine villagers mentioned in Telani’s complaints were arrested.
Khunti District Police Superintendent Ashutosh Shekhar said: “The decapitated bodies of the three were recovered from a hole near the Raba River in a nearby forest. Villagers are known to have been kidnapped about 23 days ago on charges of practicing witchcraft. We have arrested three people from the same village named Soma Munda, Raghu Munda and Bishra Munda. They have confessed to being involved in this crime. He said an operation was underway to catch the remaining suspects, including a local hammer doctor.
According to the Hindustan Times, citing local sources, a boy was born in the village earlier this month. However, the newborn died a few days later. The local hammer doctor informed the family that the cause of the newborn’s death was the practice of witchcraft by the Birsa Mundar family. Three members of the family have disappeared since the incident.
