Three separate cases have been filed at the Patgram Police Station on Saturday afternoon for allegedly beating and burning Abu Yusuf Shahidunnabi Jewel to death for entering the mosque and insulting the Quran. Police arrested five people involved in the incident.

Sumon Kumar Mahant, officer in charge of the Patgram Police Station, confirmed the matter to The Daily Star on Saturday night.

“The names of these five people will not be released for the sake of arresting others,” he said. Yet they are all notorious defendants. An operation is underway to arrest others involved in the incident. Those involved will be subject to the law.

According to the police, Saiful Alam, a cousin of the murdered Abu Yusuf Shahidunnabi Jewel, brought a murder case against hundreds of known people and hundreds of unknown people.

Shahjahan Ali, the deputy inspector (SI) of the police station, brought another case on behalf of the police against more than fifty notables and hundreds of unidentified people for obstructing the government’s work and injuring the police.

On the other hand, Abu Saeed Newaz Nishat, Chairman of Burimari Union Parishad, brought another case against more than fifty known people and hundreds of unknown people in connection with the vandalism and arson of the Union Parishad.

OC Sumon Kumar Mahanta told The Daily Star: “A man named Abu Yusuf Shahidunnabi Jewel, 50, was beaten and set on fire in Burimari Bazar on the Patgram upazila border in Lalmonirhat on Thursday night after accusations of insulting the Quran . Jewel and her friend Sultan Abbas from Abu Jobay came to Burimari on a motorcycle for a tour. She performed the Asr prayers at the Burimari Central Mosque together with Burimari Union Parishad. After the prayer, she was looking at the Quran and books of Hadith that were kept on the mosque shelf with the mosque keeper, Jobed Ali. When a Qur’an fell off the shelf due to carelessness, the wizard and the five worshipers began to shout. Later, when rumors spread insulting the victim, this cruel incident occurred.

He added: “Thousands of people surrounded the Parishad Union with bricks, stones and sticks. After attacking the police and destroying the union council, Jewel was beaten to death and his body burned.

A three-member investigation team from the district administration has been working in the field since yesterday. The team is headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADM) TMA Momin. The other members are the Additional Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rabiul Islam and Officer Patgram Upazila Nirbahi (UNO) Kamrun Nahar.

Patgram OC Sumon Kumar Mahanta Police Station said the body was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Friday afternoon after autopsy and DNA identification.

The deceased was identified as Jewel, son of the late Abu Wazed Miah from the Shalban area of ​​Rangpur city. He studied Information Science and Library Management at the University of Dhaka.
