Prison authorities have begun to release prisoners to reduce pressure on prisons due to the coronavirus. The process has started from prisons across the country and a total 2,084 people will be released in a few steps.
The process began with the release of 160 people on Saturday. Another 375 people will be released on Sunday. Prison authorities say all those released have received lenient sentences. Those who have been sentenced to a maximum of one year are on this list. Listed prisoners are released in three months: six months to one year, three months to six months, and zero to three months.
There are 6 prisons across the country. Although the capacity of these jails is 41,000, there are more than 65,000 inmates, according to the Department of Prisons.
Prison Department’s additional inspector general, Colonel Abrar Hossain, told Prothom Alo that all those released have been sentenced. At the end of the trial, his sentence was set at a maximum of one year. Some may have spent a month in jail, others may have spent 9 months. In this case, they will not be released if they are involved in some other serious crime, such as child abduction, rape, or murder.
Abrar Hossain said the defendant in any case is not being released.
Brigadier General Inspector General of Prisons AKM Mustafa Kamal Pasha told Prothom Alo that there are many more prisoners in prisons than capacity. The release process began at the behest of the government to reduce pressure on Corona in this situation. When asked if there were plans to release someone after the 2,084 were released, the inspector general said they would act as directed by the government.
