Russian troops patrol the border between the two countries.
The war between Armenia and Azerbaijan for the occupation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region ended with a ceasefire agreement negotiated by Russia. The country says 2,371 Armenian soldiers have died in the six-week conflict.
Elena Nikoghosian, spokesperson for the Armenian Ministry of Health, shared the information on her Facebook status. He said the soldiers’ identities had been confirmed through forensic evidence. In the early 1990s, 30,000 people died in clashes over the same issue. That conflict was stopped in 1994 through a ceasefire agreement. More recently, Russian peacekeepers have been deployed along the border between the two countries in accordance with a recent ceasefire agreement.
Nagarno-Karabakh, an Armenian ethnic group, is an enclave in Azerbaijan. The people of this region are Armenian Christians. The region is also internationally recognized as Muslim-dominated Azerbaijan. But a large part of the Armenian people is sensitive to Armenia. That is why Armenia also supports them. So far no effective way has been found between the two countries to take control of the region. Attempts by the international community have repeatedly failed. Source: AsiaTimes.
