At least 15 people have been killed in cross-border shelling between India and Pakistan on the border with Kashmir. 10 of them are civilians.
The incident took place on Friday (November 13) in the Keran border sector.
Qatar-based Al Jazeera reports that this is the fiercest battle in years between South Asia’s two archrivals in nuclear power.
Citing Indian officials, the report said that six Indian civilians, three soldiers and a member of the border guard force were killed in the clashes.
Pakistan says four Pakistani civilians and a member of the military were killed in the clashes. Two others were injured in the Sapphire Valley in Pakistani-administered Kashmir.
Meanwhile, reports of deaths and damage are coming in across the Neelam Valley, a Pakistani official said.
The two nuclear-armed countries in South Asia blame each other for the incident.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry summoned a senior Indian diplomat to protest the incident, according to a statement.
After the partition of the subcontinent in 1947, the two countries were embroiled in frequent conflicts for control of Kashmir. The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 2003 in the interest of stability in the region. However, it has always been broken. The two countries have repeatedly blamed each other for this.
According to the Pakistani Foreign Ministry, India has violated the ceasefire agreement at least 2,729 times this year. For this 21 people have died. And 206 people were seriously injured.
