The epicenter was reported below the Turkish coast in Izmir, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake affected Athens, the capital of Greece, as well as Istanbul, Turkey.

The tsunami wave hit both countries in the earthquake. Parts of the Izmir coastline in Turkey have been flooded.

Turkey’s state media quoted the Agency for Emergency and Disaster Management (AFAD) as saying 12 people had died. One of them drowned. 419 people were injured.

Meanwhile, a teenage boy and a teenage girl died when the walls of a house collapsed on the Greek island of Samos.

About 20 houses collapsed in Izmir, Turkey. The United States Geological Survey estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 8. However, the epicenter was reported below the epicenter; no tsunami warning was issued.

Both Turkey and Greece are on the “fault line”. That is why there are occasional earthquakes in that region.

Photos and videos posted on social media show a search for victims under the rubble of the collapsed building. The Izmir governor said 70 people had been rescued from the rubble.

The Greek island of Samos was also affected by tsunamis and floods. A 6.7 magnitude tremor was felt on the island, authorities said.
