A court granted five days of preventive detention to 13 Chhatra Dal leaders and activists in a case of clashes between the police and Chhatra Dal in front of the National Press Club in the capital.
The police presented them at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Court on Monday (March 1). The investigator of the case requested that they be forwarded to him for ten days for a proper investigation to be carried out. After the hearing, Dhaka Additional Metropolitan (ACMM) Asaduzzaman Nur granted remand to each of them for 5 days.
The defendants in remand are Manjurul Alam, Ataur Rahman, Masud Rana, Shafiqul Islam, Shahiraj, Ahsan Habib Bhuiyan Raju, Kabir Hossain, Monowar Islam, Ariful Haque, Anichur Rahman, Khandaker Anik, Abu Hayat Md. Zulfiqar, Atif Morshed and Ramzan.
Police and students clashed yesterday in front of the National Press Club
According to sources in the case, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists tried to protest in front of the National Press Club on Sunday (February 28) without permission to protest the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in jail and the revocation of Ziaur Rahman’s title. The police request to stop and leave the streets. Chhatra Dal leaders and activists took positions within the press club. They started throwing bricks at the police. The police fired tear gas to control the situation. After that, persecutions and clashes began between the police and Chhatra Dal leaders and activists. Traffic stopped on the road in front of the press club.
Shahbagh Police Deputy Inspector Palash Shah filed a case charging 48 BNP leaders and activists in the incident on Sunday night. In addition, 200-250 anonymous individuals have been charged.
So far, the police have arrested 13 people in connection with the clashes. The case alleges (police assault) attempted murder, assault and vandalism.
