Al Jazeera reports that hundreds of people have already been killed in escalating clashes in Ethiopia’s disputed Tigris region.
Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, said it was considering rescuing stranded Bangladeshis and was cooperating with international organizations, including the United Nations.
The conflict in northern Ethiopia, Africa’s second-largest country bordering Eritrea and Sudan, is expected to escalate into a full-blown civil war. The number of people killed in ethnic unrest has been on the rise since 2016. Meanwhile, the United Nations has warned that aid agencies cannot store the food, medical supplies and emergency supplies that are being provided to people in the region. As a result, there is a fear of creating a refugee crisis here.
The DBL factory is known to have been installed on 75 hectares of land in Ethiopia. Swedish retailer H&M brought DBL to Ethiopia for the first time. Workers are available there with lower wages than in Bangladesh. There is an opportunity to export garments from Ethiopia to the United States duty free, an opportunity that is currently not available for export from Bangladesh.
