## Inter-district buses will not enter the capital
## The 3 existing terminals will be used for city buses
## Bus route rationalization activities will be visible next year

The Bus Route Rationalization Committee has proposed to build 10 terminals in the border areas of Dhaka City. The committee thinks that if the project is implemented, interdistrict buses will not enter the capital. Buses will drop passengers off at the designated bus terminal and take them to their destination. This will bring order to the city’s public transportation and reduce traffic congestion.

However, public transport experts say that the feasibility study should be done better before project implementation. They say that the development of infrastructure is not a big problem in this project, it is important to ensure its proper use. In particular, the police administration and the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) should play a leading role. Furthermore, it should be monitored whether the buses are working properly or not, whether the passengers are receiving service or not.

On September 9, 2016, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formed a 10-member committee to streamline bus routes and reduce traffic congestion in the metropolis of Dhaka. The convener of the committee was the then Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, Mohammad Saeed Khokon. The committee then appoints a consultant to assess and report on the reality. The survey was carried out over a long period of two years. Later, on November 10, the report was presented at the thirteenth meeting of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in Nagar Bhaban. In this report, 10 new bus terminals have been proposed. However, Anisul Haque, the late mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, was the initiator of the rationalization of bus routes and the management of buses through the company. Now, the bus route rationalization committee is implementing its plans.

10 terminals outside of Dhaka
According to the Bus Route Rationalization Committee, the Sayedabad, Mohakhali and Gabtali terminals have a capacity of 1,500 buses. But now 9,298 buses stay in terminal three every day. Thousands more buses are parked on different roads in the city. This is one of the main causes of traffic jams. To solve this problem, the committee has proposed 10 new terminals in the border areas of Dhaka city.

These are: Kanchpur North (15.46 acres), Kanchpur South (26.61 acres), Baghair in Keraniganj (33.63 acres), Hemayetpur in Savar (36.50 acres), Birulia (14.53 acres), Gazipur (eleven). 60 acres), Nabinagar-Chandra pile road (40.40 acres), Kanchan area (24.24 acres), Bhawal de Atibazar (25.6 acres) and Bhulta (24.22 acres).

This way it will not be necessary to park any car on the road. There will be no traffic jams.

Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) currently chairs the Bus Route Rationalization Committee.

In this regard, he said, ‘Buses coming from outside of Dhaka will drop passengers off at the designated terminal in the city’s border area. Passengers will then travel to their destination via City Service or MRT or other service provider vehicles. We will make sure the arrangements are safe. This will reduce traffic pressure in the main city of Dhaka. Bus route rationalization activities will be visible over the next year.
