Ten members of the same family, including women and children, were burned in a gas cylinder fire in the Katkhal Hajipara village in the Haor-inhabited Katkhal junction of Mithamin upazila in Kishoreganj. Five of the burn victims are in critical condition.
The fire was sparked when gas leaked from a gas pipe while cooking was done Saturday afternoon.
Katkhal UP President Md Tajul Islam said the accident happened at the home of poor farmer Abdus Salam in Hajipara. Abdus Salam’s wife, Shifa Begum (65), three sons Kamal (35), Anwar (32), Jamal (26), daughter Taslima (25), Juena (20), Taslima’s two daughters Umme Hani ( 3), Umme Habiba (3 months) and Abdus Salam’s eldest son, Abdul Ali’s daughters, Parveen (15) and Tahura (10), were burned. Five of the 10 burn victims were in critical condition.
Sources from the Zahurul Islam Medical College Hospital in Bajitpur said that except for a three-month-old baby, 60 percent of the body was burned. All of them have been sent to Dhaka. Among them, Shifa Begum, Jamal Mia and Umme Hani are in critical condition. In addition, the condition of two others is serious.
Witness Katkhal High School President Shamsul Haque Rana said there was a hole in the gas cylinder pipe at Abdus Salam’s home in Hajipur village. The gas had already spread from the hole throughout the house. Salam’s wife, Shifa Begum, was unable to turn on the stove while cooking. At that time, when they went to light the stove with fire from outside, the fire spread throughout the house. Later, the locals went to put out the fire and rescued the burned people and sent them to the hospital.
Md Masud Mia, deputy inspector in charge of the Katkhal research center, said that four or five of the nine burn victims were in critical condition. They were sent to the Zahurul Islam Medical College Hospital in Bajitpur.
He said the fire was caused by ignorance in the use of gas. The plastic tube from the cylinder went into the oven. Whether or not there is a problem with it, many don’t really notice it. And because of this neglect, many people have been burned.
