Let’s face it: anything above $ 100 is a lot of cash for a braided cable. This is beyond discussion, a kind of affront to the Monoprice gods who have taught us that most cables are only worth 5 cents an inch. So what does Apple think it’s doing with this new Thunderbolt 3 Pro Cable that reaches $ 130?

First of all, it is braided. That adds up to fifty dollars right there. And second, it’s really long, about six and a half feet, and it’s probably the only cable you use to connect your MacBook to a Pro Display XDR monitor or other data-intensive peripheral. According to Apple, it supports DisplayPort and USB 3.1, and the transfer rate of 40 Gb / s vs. length is quite impressive.

Basically you buy this if you absolutely have to have solid performance between your sleek new Mac Pro and your sleek new monitor. If you can survive a shorter length, Apple also has a $ 39 super short cable with the same characteristics that can explode between peripherals.

Finally, because it’s so long, you can easily and ostentatiously move it around the office like Indiana Jones, showing everyone that you own a long and deadly chain of raw data.
