The NFLPA announced on its website that 72 players had tested positive for COVID-19 as of July 10. It is unclear how many players have taken the COVID-19 tests, but few of the positive players are known.
Rams offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth announced in an NFLPA conference call Friday that he was one.
Whitworth shared her story in hopes of showing how quickly the virus can spread and how it can be transmitted “innocently” to older, higher-risk people.
“I think to really identify ourselves when we say you are going to have to make safe decisions, and you are going to have to be safe outside the building, we are talking about things as simple as going to lunch with someone,” Whitworth said. “All that is needed is an exhibition. Thats the reality. My story is an example of that. We had a relative who simply went to lunch with a friend as innocent as can be. A couple of days later we were all traveling together, and she started not feeling well and decided to have a test. The next thing we know is that she had it. A couple of days later, my wife and I had it. A couple of days after that, our children had it. So we were around seven by seven at the time, and unfortunately, we had just visited my wife’s family and we were also traveling with them and their mother and father understood. ”
Whitworth’s father-in-law needed hospitalization, leaving Whitworth and the rest of the family shaken for a few days.
“We took him home four or five days ago, and he’s home now,” Whitworth said. “We are very blessed that he and he are doing well. But it was definitely scary and realizing how contagious this really is. It doesn’t take much, and it can spread like a forest fire.
“For us, it affected us personally. It was terrifying. For our family and our children, we ended well, and everything seemed to be quite normal, a rather mild case. But for his parents, it was not like that ”.
That’s the reality for everyone who says, “Soccer players are young and healthy, and they will be fine if they catch him.” Without a bubble for the NFL, it’s everyone the player comes in contact with.
