EL PASO, Texas – Amazon officially announced plans on Wednesday to open its first distribution operation in El Paso, a facility the BorderPlex Alliance described as “massive.”
The new “fulfillment center,” as Amazon calls it, is expected to open in 2021.
The online retailer said it will create more than 700 new full-time jobs with pay rates starting at $ 15 an hour along with medical and other benefits.
“We are excited to increase our operations in West Texas and look forward to building our network in El Paso,” said Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s vice president of global customer compliance.
He cited strong support from local leaders for a deal to open a store in the border area, prompting El Paso Mayor Dee Margo to proclaim that “our city has a bright future.”
As ABC-7 previously reported, construction is already underway at the El Paso east site for the facility, which lies between Rojas and Interstate 10 near Eastlake.
Once the 625,000-square-foot building is completed, Amazon said the hundreds of new hires it hires will work alongside robotics teams to pack and ship items like books, electronics and toys to customers.
An official with the BorderPlex Alliance, a regional economic development group, said Amazon had not sought state or local tax exemptions or other tax incentives before agreeing to build in El Paso.
