Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slams NBC News for misleading tweet

The DNC tapped the Democratic representative from New York to second the nomination of Senator Bernie Sanders for president. Sanders ended his presidency in April and endorsed candidate Joe Biden, but he was still in line for the formal count delegates that took place Tuesday night.

NBC News then published a tweet that seems to imply that Ocasio-Cortez Biden is snobbish.

“In one of the DNC’s most recent speeches, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez did not sign Joe Biden,” a tweet from the official NBC News Twitter account said.

NBC News later deleted the tweet and added a screenshot of it to an editor’s note, which was tweeted hours later saying, “This tweet should have included more detail about the nomination process.”

Biden won enough delegates in June to seek the nomination at the first vote of the party’s convention. But back in April, after Sanders dropped out of the race, the Biden campaign and a political group representing Sanders negotiated a deal to keep the Vermont Senator the delegates he already received. That deal meant the senator could complete delegate and standing treaty commission slots where he would have been eligible if he still had an active campaign. Over the course of Tuesday, Biden outscored the 2,374 delegates needed to win the nomination.

Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged in a tweet on Tuesday night that conventional rules can be confusing and elaborate on their role there.

“If you were confused, do not worry! Agreement rules require roll Call & Nominations for every candidate who passes the delegate’s threshold,” she tweets. “I was asked to be the 2nd nom for sen. Sanders for roll call.” They also congratulate Biden on winning the nomination.

NBC News’ misleading tweet ranked Ocasio-Cortez, who retweeted the editor’s note and slammed the network for how it was handled.

“It caused an enormous amount of hatred and vitriol, and now the mischief you have created is circulating on other networks,” she said. “Everything to generate hate clicks from a pre-recorded, routine procedural motion.”

She also bought the network for editing the editor’s note timeline, and asked how they “repaired the enormous amount of damage and misinformation for which you are now responsible?”

“Because a 1:15 hour tweet slips under the radar after blowing up a completely false and divisive story about networks, it is not,” she said.

NBC News declined to comment beyond sharing the editor’s notes and explanations in a blog post on the subject.

Earlier in the day, the DNC released a press release to the media, including CNN, citing the role of Ocasio-Cortez in delivering a nominating speech for Sanders. She pointed this out in another follow-up tweet.

“The DNC shared the procedural purpose of my comments to media WELL beforehand. @NBC knew what was going to happen & that it was routine,” she tweeted. “How does a header that happens malicious & misleading come with this foreknowledge?”

Ocasio-Cortez did not respond to a request for comment.
