Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has done a step-by-step tutorial of her makeup routine for Vogue – while lamenting that it is being treated “so badly” seriously on Capitol Hill.
The newborn congresswoman from The Bronx video-recorded herself creating foundation, curling her lashes, talking about the benefits of adding glitter to the eye shadow and revealing what shade of lipstick she uses.
“I used to think I would be taken less seriously, and as the youngest woman in Congress and as a woman of color, it’s so hard to be taken seriously,” the 30-year-old Democratic Socialist told Vogue magazine video clip, just before she shows off her golden glittery eyeshadow palette.
‘It’s like any workplace, where it sometimes feels like you’re just jumping up and down for someone to listen to. It’s just hard because some people are just born into bodies that are naturally taken more seriously. ”
AOC – which last week continued to row the Democratic establishment with a speech back as presidency hopeful sen. Bernie Sanders at the party convention – said she made the video because she finds empowerment in her makeup bag.
“The reason I think it’s so important to share these things is that, in the first place, femininity has power, and in politics there is so much criticism and nitpicking about how women and femme men treat us. present, “said the congresswoman.
‘Just being a woman is pretty politicized here in Washington.
“There’s this really false idea that if you care about makeup or if you have interests in beauty and fashion, that it’s somehow scary,” she said.
‘But I actually think these are some of the most meaningful decisions we make – and we make them every morning.
“If I’m going to spend an hour in the morning an hour my glam, it will not be because I’m afraid of what Republican photography looks like,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
“It’s because I like it.” ‘
For the record, here’s some of what AOC requires:
Face: Lightweight tinted moisturizer from Nars, Estee Lauder’s Double Wear finish, Fenty Beauty’s Contour Stick, color correction, concealer, vitamin C serum and a “generous” amount of sunscreen. She said she will often use a moisturizing mask when getting on and off the train to DC.
Eyebrows: pencil. “I’m very lucky because there are brows,” AOC said. ‘My family has eyebrows. A lot of people in my family are born with one brow, and we have to convert it into two brows. ”
Eyes: Glittery eye shadow, crayon liner, mascara.
Lips: Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso. “One of the things I had realized is that if you are always running round, sometimes the best way to look really composed is a fat lip,” AOC said. ‘I’ll wear a red lip if I want to be confident.
‘If I had to give one piece of advice,’ the legislator added, ‘it is that the key to beauty is inside the job – the key to beauty feels wonderful, and no amount of money or make-up can really compensate for your love.’ ‘
