After the remaining 5 characters for Fighters Pass Vol. 2 are released, development continues since Smash 4 will end.

Now that Min Min is available to play in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Masahiro Sakurai can freely talk about his development. Thanks to the efforts of PushDust1n and Robert Sephazon, we now have a translation of the last entry in Masahiro Sakurai’s Famitsu column.

Sakurai reportedly confirms that DLC support for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will end after Fighters Pass Vol. The remaining five characters of 2 are terminated.

“There are only five more DLC fighters left. After its release, continued development of Smash of Smash for 3DS and Wii U will finally come to an end.” – Masahiro Sakurai

“There are only five more DLC fighters. After they have been released, the continued development of Smash from Smash for 3DS and Wii U will finally come to an end,” Sakurai said according to the Sephazon translation. “The team is already developing the remaining characters and will continue to do their best work from home.”

When the global COVID-19 pandemic hit, Japan declared a state of emergency that limited the country’s residents to their homes. Thanks to Sakurai and her company, Sora Ltd., the development team at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has made a smooth transition working from home.

Despite the circumstances surrounding the new coronavirus, Masahiro Sakurai and the rest of the development team promised to deliver the Fighters Pass Vol. The remaining 5 characters out of 2.

It appears that there are currently no plans for a Fighters Pass Vol. 3 once development for the second group of challengers is complete. Sakurai even mentioned earlier that he wasn’t sure if the series could continue after Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In particular, Sakurai has been working on the Smash series almost nonstop since Super Smash Bros. 4, with no short break between the design of the Smash 4 DLC and the base game for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

While data miners have previously reported that there will still be plenty of character slots in reserve once Fighters Pass Vol. 2 is complete, it appears that the total number of playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (including Echo Fighters as their own entities) will be 86.
