A mouthwash to defeat COVID-19? Scientists say a mouthwash could reduce the spread of the infection

Researchers have found their evidence based on oral disinfectant solutions based on studies based at the Ruhr University Bochum in Germany found that high levels of coronavirus exist within the upper respiratory tract, including the mouth and throat.

It is also possible that the oral and pharyngeal cavities act as the ideal environment for the virus to regulate itself in healthy individuals after infection. Since the spread of respiratory droplets, coughs, nausea or vomiting are the probable causes of proliferation, a gum solution such as mouthwash could reduce the risk of transmission and subsequently reduce the viral load or even multiply it.

“Our findings clearly call for the evaluation of selected formulations in a clinical context to systematically evaluate the decontamination and tissue health of the oral cavity in patients and healthcare professionals to prevent potential virus transmission,” the scientists wrote in the study.

Researchers also believe that if found effective, mouthwashes could act as a standard protocol in dental procedures and further reduce the risk of transmission. The same is being studied now.
