In honor of Princess Anne’s 70th birthday on Saturday, Buckingham Palace has released three new photos of the Queen’s only daughter. The portraits of the Princess Royal were taken in February 2020 at her home, Gatcombe Park, by photographer John Swannell.
Swannell, whose resume includes stints at Vogue, Tatler, and the Sunday Times, has photographed members of the royal family (including the Queen and the late Queen Mother) several times, and over the years he has proven himself to be a favorite photographer of Princess Anne’s. Not only did Swannell take her portrait this year, but he also took the official pictures of the Princess Royal for her 40th, 50th and 60th birthdays.
While two of today’s shared portraits show the Princess in formal attire, the third is much more casual, showing Anne’s appreciation for the outdoors – and the impressive grounds of Gatcombe Park. At her side in the photo below turns out to be a reed, a favorite accessory of Anne’s for walking in the countryside.
Before the coronavirus pandemic hit Europe, there were apparently plans for a Buckingham Palace party to celebrate Anne’s milestone birthday, but like so many who marked special occasions during this difficult time, the Princess Royal had to make plans change.
“There were plans that needed to change, but I’m sure we’ll find a way to reunite as a family,” Anne’s son-in-law Mike Tindall said in an interview with Good Morning Britain this week.
