YouTube tests for iOS app native picture-in-picture mode

Reports, YouTube is testing Picture in Picture (PIP) mode for its iOS app 9to5Mac. This feature allows users to watch YouTube videos while using other apps, and was discovered by developer Daniel Yunt, who stumbled upon it while watching a YouTube live stream on his iPad.

YouTube was not able to work PIP during any other playback scenes, indicating that the feature is still in the experimental stage.

The YouTube app has never endorsed PIP, which is available to IPAD users from iOS 9. This is a feature. Apple will also bring a pip to the iPhone with iOS 14 due to the release this fall.

Developer Steve Truro Tone-Smith Presumably the launch of the feature is part of a deal between Google and Apple Pull that supports YouTube’s VP9 codec in TVOS 14 and IOS 14+, 4K YouTube content can be viewed on that platform. In any case, it is not clear that PIP will be available to all users when the YouTube feature is launched.

Officially, YouTube only allows playback videos to users in the background if they subscribe to YouTube Premium, which means PIP may be restricted to paid users. YouTube Premium Priced at 99 11.99 (via the YouTube app for iOS for 15.99 due to the purchase fee in the 99 Pal app)

However, IIOS 14-users can still watch YouTube videos in the picture via Safari. Read our step-by-step guide to learn how.
