YouTube Music adds collaborative playlists with suggestions

As we’ve been following for the past few weeks, YouTube Music will soon allow you to create collaborative playlists with others. Additionally, Google’s streaming service provides machine learning-based song suggestions.

Once implemented, all of your YouTube Music playlists will include a “Collaborate” button on the edit screen to rename, add a description, and set privacy. Users will receive a link to share, and then others will be able to add songs to the playlist. Each contribution will be accompanied by the name of the person responsible for the presentation.

Collaborative music playlists, long found in YouTube’s full video service, are initially being rolled out on Android today, with iOS devices below.

Meanwhile, individual and group playlists will benefit from song recommendations. As we saw this morning, users will see a “Tips” section at the bottom of each playlist that provides a handful of tunes with a quick “add” button. YouTube Music is taking advantage of machine learning to provide “relevant song recommendations.”

Google explains what the feature looks like in existing songs, as well as its listening history, while even the titles of the playlists are enough to provide suggestions:

Recommendations are based on existing songs in the playlist, as well as custom cues like play history and likes. Even if the playlist is empty, this function can provide song recommendations simply based on the name of the playlist!

Google tells us that this is again being implemented on Android via a server-side update. In the past few hours, more users have found the feature.
