Republican Senator Marco Rubio has been widely ridiculed on social media after he criticized Democrats for choosing Eva Longoria to host the party’s national convention.
The actress, who has a long history of political activism, stepped down proceedings on day one of the convention, which ended with a speech by former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Ms Longoria, speaking at the 2016 conference in Philadelphia, acted as emcee for the unique event that was forced to forget the typical large gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic. Actresses Kerry Washington, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Tracee Ellis Ross will host the next three nights.

“Brilliant move!” Mr. Rubio tweeted sarcastically, in response to Longoria’s appearance.
“No one is more in touch with the challenges and obstacles that every American has to face than actors and celebrities,” the Florida senator added.
Both prominent figures and ordinary Twitter users were quick to point out to Senator Rubio that the current resident of the White House had a long stint as a reality TV star.
Others refer to the fact that celebrities have spoken at previous GOP conventions. This year, the Republican convention will be held next week.
“Cuz Trumps & Kushners are so in touch w / challenges and obstacles of the day-to-day Americans,” tweeted Republican strategist and political commentator Ana Navarro-Cárdenas in a memorandum.
“Unlike Trump, @EvaLongoria is self-made. She did not receive millions in bail-outs from her father, ‘she added. “Unlike you, she does not remain in complicated silence while our community is being demonized.”
In response to Rubio’s post, one Twitter user said: “Boy, you literally spoke directly to Clint Eastwood at the 2012 Congress.
‘How could you forget that? He spoke with empty *** chair. Nobody still knows what you said. “
Another just wrote, “Now don’t, Marco, talk to the adults.”
“You literally chose a Reality TV star to become the president,” tweeted another.
Fred Guttenberg, a gun control activist whose 14-year-old daughter Jaime was murdered at Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018 in Florida, wrote: ‘Shame on you. I’m involved in this convention, but not an actor or celebrity.
‘My daughter was killed in the state you represent because of the gun violence you did not tackle. This convention represents me and everyone else who wants leadership. Real Americans. ”
Monday night’s event ended with an emotional speech by Michelle Obama. The former first lady launched a blistering attack on Trump in her pre-recorded speech.
Mrs. Obama, along with her husband, had until recently avoided criticizing Trump by name in public.
She accused the president of “faking” his way through the presidency, adding that Mr. Trump was the “wrong president for our country.”
‘He’s above his head. He can not satisfy the moment … It’s what it is, ‘she added. “He’s had more than enough time to prove he can do the job, but he’s clearly over his head.”
The virtual DNC will continue Tuesday night and include speeches by former President Bill Clinton and New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
