Yes, that really is Colin Farrell as Penguin in ‘The Batman’ Trailer

It’s kind of unbelievable how many pictures were shown in this weekend’s official teaser trailer for The Batman from DC FanDome, because as a director Matt Reeves explained during the film’s panel, only 25% of the film is actually recorded at this point. Production was stopped due to the pandemic, so it’s a wonder we even have a trailer now.

The FanDome teaser gave us a bunch of recordings of Robert Pattinson‘s Batman / Bruce Wayne and even our first glimpse at Colin Farrell like the Penguin, although we honestly did not even notice the last appearance until it was shown to us. That’s because Farrell is completely unrecognizable in the film, transformed into the DC villain with classic practical makeup.

As Heather Wixson explained over the weekend, Dick Smith protégée Michael Marino transformed Farrell for the film, which Marino himself – in case you were still in doubt – confirmed yesterday on his official Instagram account. Although many did not believe it, the makeup artist let us know that yes, that is really Colin Farrell among all those prothetics.

At a time when superhero movies are dominated by CG effects, it’s definitely fun to see practical work clearly The Batman. Good old-fashioned film magic, folks. Can’t beat it.

Warner Bros. / DC’s The Batman is currently set for release on 1 October 2021.
