The Yankees and Red Sox are meeting for the final time this season, so of course, they had to deliver a long, extra innings game just outside the bat. The Bombers emerged victorious despite falling 4-0 early and taking an extra innings lead in the 11th before taking a 6-5 lead in the 12th. Let’s get into the right highlights.
Winners of the game
The Yankees had a lot of players standing up tonight. DJ Lamhiau delivered the game-winning hit, double-down run-scoring below the line to knock in Geo Ursella. Luke Voyette got the first run in the extras, dropping an innings down the left side before that, and Giaccarlo Stanton got the team close with an RBI double in the eighth.
However, the biggest bat of the night was Gary Sonchez. Sanchez started the seventh in the plate by filling the dice. Sanchez ripped a ball into the right field, in a one-hopping for a ground-rule double, which probably saved the Red Sox a second run. Sinchez injected him with a game-building solo shot from the ninth over. In the 11th he had the lead role that allowed the runner to advance and eventually scored, but without the heroism of the Yankees Sanchez would not have come close to winning the game.
Game Loser
It was an up-and-down performance tonight for Jordan Montgomery. He made a strong start early in the night, advancing to the side in the first inning and getting a nice double-game to finish second, but the trouble arose in the fourth. Christian Arroyo smashed a three-run home run from Montgomery’s home that put the Sox ahead, and later a Christian Vasquez knocked him out of the game with an RBI double. The Yankees need constant Montgomery to arrive on time for the playoffs, and he’s not there yet.
