The Yankees couldn’t ask for much more tonight, scoring early and often against the Mets in the first of three exhibition games before the season begins. The Bombers’ offense was able to get an early lead from Rick Porcello, and the procession of Mets pitchers that followed failed to keep them off the scoreboard often. Meanwhile, Michael King and the Yankees kept many situations from turning into scoring opportunities. Put it all together, and you’ll have a 9-3 Yankees win.
Game winner
Clint Frazier had the biggest hit of the game, throwing an offer from Porcello to the second deck in the fourth inning for a two-run shot. The broadcast noted a new batting stance for Frazier on his first at-bat in the second inning, and brought good results for the outfielder today.
Michael King also had a good start, making his last case for a spot on the list before the season begins. King lasted four innings today, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out three. He had the two-seater working, and it earned him control of the corners:
Honorable mention: Gio Urshela, for playing this game. Third baseman was seen leaving the field just before game time and there was some concern when coach Steve Donohue had to check it out. It turned out that a baseball had managed to score Urshela in the groin, and it was understandable that he felt somewhat awkward for a while after that.
Loser of the game
After a performance like that, you won’t find losers on the Yankees’ side. However, it would be fair to call the Mets defense because they didn’t play fair. The home team made four errors throughout the game, allowing two runs to score that could have been avoided.
