It was bad enough that the Yankees lost Saturday night to the Rays. What’s less, they might have lost Giancarlo Stanton for the immediate future. The designated hitter left the game prior to the sixth inning. According to Meredith Marakovits, he went out with a tight left hamstring.
At his postgame conference, manager Aaron Boone said Stanton will probably head to the injured list, indicating that it concerns more than tightness. Stanton will undergo an MRI shortly. Hamstring injuries are notoriously difficult. They are slow to heal, and they are fairly easy to injure. A grade 2 strain could sideline him for the rest of the season, and at least a grade 3 could just exclude him for the playoffs. That’s them dat kind of bad.
Stanton had been 0-for-1 with a walk, scoring a run earlier in the game. He pulled that walk into the fourth inning, and then stepped to second on a wild pitch. He told Bryan Hoch that’s where he felt the lure. To the required video:
The 30-year-old has been very productive so far this season, hitting .293 / .453 / .585 with three home games, including one earlier today against Sean Gilmartin.
The designated Yankees hitter has a long history of injuries, having appeared in just 18 games in the regular season in 2019. He also missed part of the spring training with a calf strain.
It is unclear who will call the team to replace Stanton on the roster, but Miguel Andújar and Clint Frazier stand out as likely candidates.
This is an evolving situation. We will have more information when it becomes available. Stay tuned to Pinstripe Alley for future updates.
