New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka was drilled in the right side of the head by a line from Giancarlo Stanton while pitching his first simulated game Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
After being hit, Tanaka collapsed on the launch mound when Stanton knelt on the plate. The right-hander was on the mound for about five minutes.
Tanaka, 31, was able to leave the field, cross the shelter, and enter the clubhouse with the help of several employees and coaches.
The Yankees players fell silent as medical personnel rushed to attend to the starter, who is a key player in the team’s rotation.
In six seasons with the Yankees, Tanaka is 75-43 with a 3.75 ERA, 947 strikeouts and 200 walks.
The Yankees have already lost a starting pitcher to injury, and Luis Severino had Tommy John surgery in the spring.
Saturday was the first official “summer camp” practice day for the Yankees in the Bronx.
