I wasn’t expecting Bungie to appear on Microsoft’s Xbox Series X show as I thought it was only for first party games, but they blocked it with a couple of ads. The first was that Destiny 2 and all of its DLCs and expansions, including Beyond Light, are coming to Game Pass this fall, which is such a crazy value that I don’t even know where to start, and should help exploit the population of Xbox gamers.
The second was the debut of a new trailer that showcased the new Stasis subclass (don’t worry, it’s not Xbox exclusive), revealing some of the many different types of ice powers we’ll have with the new subclass.
Among the highlights I saw:
- Ice is used as a platform where you can make it protrude from a wall
- Enemies can be frozen and subsequently destroyed with AOE moves during an instakill.
- Frozen enemies with melee projectiles
- A kind of ice grenade
- Warlocks have an ice staff that they can wield in the first person, Hunters have dueling ice axes, I think the Titans have some sort of ice armor movement that shoots chunks of ice from the ground.
In all of these Destiny years we are finally seeing what a whole new subclass and element looks like, and so far I am deeply impressed by this creativity. We still don’t know exactly how this subclass will work. Rumors seem to indicate that it will not be like the current system of three “trees” that we have now for the other elements, and it seems possible that everything the system will change beyond light as Destiny seeks to move more in RPG territory.
Beyond the ice, we got at least a peek at a new armor and possible weapons from the expansion. Here we see a Titan wielding what looks like some sort of ice bomb cannon, and I’m not even sure what kind of weapon it would be. Grenade launcher?
Anyway, I can already see that this has promoted the Destiny community enough, the only problem is that the hype is now due to last until November, not September, due to the recent Beyond Light delay. While I will personally continue to play primarily on PC or PS4, I really hope that Destiny can grow further with its addition to Game Pass, and that seems highly likely, particularly with all included expansions, including Beyond Light, which is not something I would have predicted.
There’s a lot to be excited for Destiny fans today, and no one knew what was coming. I would hope to hear more about all of this on TWAB later today.
