One developer has claimed that the Xbox Series X has the power to run its game at 120 frames per second, while the PS5 cannot deliver the same results.
That developer is Dynamic Voltage Games, who is working on Orphan of the Machine, a side-scrolling game that involves the underwater adventures of a dolphin. Originally touted as an Xbox Series X exclusive, the developer will also bring the game to the PS5, but it won’t work at 4K and 120 fps.
On paper, the Xbox Series X is set to beat the PS5 with just power, offering 12 teraflops of computing power out of the 10.28 teraflops of the PS5. It is not clear what difference it would make.
But following Dynamic Voltage Games’ tweet that the PS5 can’t handle Orphan of the Machine running at 120 fps, it seems like the 1.72 teraflops difference will be noticeable in some titles.
This is the result that Orphan of the Machine cannot run at 120fps on PS5. Again, I didn’t design the PS5 hardware, so I’m not sure why they blame me for this. How many 120fps games have been announced for the PS5 anyway? pic.twitter.com/iSQvRP8fr621 July 2020
When Dynamic Voltage Games tweeted that Orphan of the Machine will be coming to the PS5 but it won’t run as fast as it does on the Xbox Series X, the tweet came across a bit of vitriol from PlayStation fans. We are very aware of how vocal PlayStation fans can be, so this reaction wasn’t exactly surprising,
I announce that my Xbox exclusive will become cross-platform: not a single Xbox “fanboy” complains. I announce that the XBSX version will be the only version that is 120 fps: several Playstation fans control the post Believe it or not, I didn’t design the PS5. Your meat is with SonyJuly 20, 2020
But Dynamic Voltage Games decided to address the negative response by explaining that it does not depend on the developer’s decision, rather that the Sony console at the hardware level does not seem to offer 120 fps and Xbox Series X games.
“[Microsoft] It seems like it cares much more about 120 fps than Sony, that’s why I’ve provided that feature to the X Series, “Dynamic Voltage Games tweeted, noting that if the resolution were to drop, perhaps the PS5 could run Orphan from the machine. at 120 fps.
It is possible if I drop the resolution. It’s something I can consider, but MS seems to care a lot more about 120 fps than Sony, that’s why I’ve taken that feature into the X Series. July 21, 2020
Dynamic Voltage Games noted that it is not blaming Sony for the frame rate difference. Rather, it said “different hardware, different results,” indicating that while the two consoles share the same AMD-based processor and graphics architecture, they are approaching it in different ways.
It could be that the Xbox Series X is designed in a way that allows developers to better access its power to run games at 120 fps. However, neither Microsoft nor Sony have revealed many games that will run at 4K and 120 fps. It looks like 4K at 60fps will be the most common target, and the PS5 seems to be able to hit it.
Microsoft has its Xbox 20/20 event on July 23, where it will showcase a full range of Xbox Series X games, primarily first-hand. Therefore, we hope to have a better view of what the Xbox Series X can do.
We’ve already seen Sony show off some of the upcoming PS5 games, and the likes of Horizon Forbidden West look spectacular. So even if Sony can’t deliver on 120fps gaming, it’s still in an enviable position to offer next-gen gaming.
