In the short term, Mims will need to focus on his rehab and continue working in class.
“We can help him improve, but at the end of the day when you play that spot, it’s all about the chemistry you have with the quarterback and we miss time,” Gase said. “He’s been here. He’s trying to do everything right. He’s getting up early. He’s trying to make sure all the good things (and he) take care of his body. It’s just a strange step he took and stretched.”
Gase liked the energy that was exhibited at the practice, but acknowledged that his club has a “long way to go” and needs to clean up the pre-snap fines. But Connor McGovern, one of seven new attacking linemen on the roster, found how the team recovered after a shaky start.
“That first team period, whether it was twos or threes. Everyone had a bit of a false starting problem getting used to the cadence. But what I thought was really good was that second team period, there was no one,” said McGovern. “It felt a bit like an early spring practice, but the nice thing is if early on if you have false start penalties or something, it goes on all day. We could switch it to four plays, so I think everyone the urgency realizes where we are and the urgency we need to improve with and the pressure we’re under to repair that little game.Once a game starts, that’s not a small thing anymore. But I think we’re repairing it quickly and it’s just showing how ready we are to take the rest and get ready for a game. “
Injury Report
The following players do not practice: RB Kenneth Dixon (hip flexor), CB Pierre Desir (hamstring), RB Frank Gore (hamstring), DL Bronson Kaufusi (hamstring), WR Denzel Mims (hamstring) and DL Jabari Zuniga (quad)
“Every day we should get someone back,” Gase said of the group. “We’ll see how it plays out with how many guys there are. Everyone reacts a little differently when they come back from soft tissue injuries.”
