WR Cody Latimer, on commissioner’s released list, cut by Washington Football Team

ASHBURN, Va. – The Washington Football Team cut off receiver Cody Latimer, who faced multiple criminal charges after being arrested in May.

Latimer was arrested on May 16 after being shot by gunmen at an apartment complex in Englewood, Colorado. Police confirm Latimer threatened a friend with a gun and fired his weapon during a poker game. Latimer faced eight prosecutors, including four criminals – second-degree assault, manipulating physical evidence and two counts of threatening.

He had been scheduled to appear in court this past Thursday, but The Washington Post reported that his trial date was postponed to Sept. He was placed on the commissioner’s release list on July 27, the day before Washington held its first full training session.

Several sources said they expected Latimer to be released, but the team wanted the league to investigate the situation before making a final decision. Washington has a young receiving corps, but a week after Latimer was placed on the released list, the team signed veteran Dontrelle Inman, who could fill a similar role.

At a hearing on May 18, Latimer’s lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, told the court he had been contacted by law enforcement regarding an investigation into a sexual assault of Latimer’s 4-year-old son that was allegedly committed by one of the people at the poker game.

Latimer, a second-round pick by Denver in 2014, has played the final two seasons with the New York Giants. He picked up the best 24 passes for 300 yards last career. He also returned 24 kickoffs for 570 yards. Washington had hoped he could help the receiving depth as well as special teams.
