Wolves score against Sevilla: Raul Jimenez’s missed penalty and Jorge Ocampos’ late goal decides it for Sevilla

The five-time winners of the Europa League are now one step closer to another chance to win their sixth title in this league. Sevilla defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 on Tuesday thanks to a late goal that was the culmination of all the build-up efforts that had put the Spanish side forward all evening.

Wolves tried to gain the upper hand early in the game with some heavy forward pressure. Although it did not work as intended, it was able to equalize possession and chances in the early stages of the first half. This eventually led to an incredible break where Adama Traore ran an impressive 80 yards into the opposition box and took a penalty after being taken from behind.

It seemed certain that the moment that Wolves desperately sought would arrive at the point, especially when clinical finisher Raul Jimenez stepped up to take the penalty kick. He hadn’t missed his last 18 marks, so he would make sure this one too, right? Wrong. Jimenez had an early run to the ball and shot his shot right into the hands of Bono, who had correctly guessed which direction the Wolves player was going.

From that moment on, Sevilla seem to regain control of the match. This was especially evident in the second half of the match when it looked like the Spanish side had just decided to never lose possession of the ball. Not only do they dominate possession, but they also dominate opportunities. Sevilla’s wave after wave gave corner after corner, but for a majority of the last 45 minutes of the match nothing came of that chance.

But there was an idea to it – the misdirected ball was turned into a cross towards Éver Banega, who was waiting for it in the box. Lucas Ocampos was the first to reach the corner kick, but his header was blocked by the keeper. Rui Patricio.
