With Thanksgiving Week in Rearview, Utah reports 1,722 coronavirus cases and 5 deaths on Sunday

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Department of Health updated state coronavirus statistics Sunday afternoon, revealing 1,722 newly tested-confirmed cases of covid-19 and five deaths from the disease.

A total of 6,143 more people have been diagnosed and 193,809 total COVID-19 cases and 868 virus deaths have been reported in the state since the outbreak began, according to the health department.

In an email, the health department said the five new deaths included:

  • A Weber County woman, aged 65 to 84, who was hospitalized after her death
  • Salt Lake County resident over 85, a long-term care facility resident
  • A Utah County man over 85 years of age who was hospitalized
  • Two Utah County men between 65 and 84 have been hospitalized

Among the newly registered cases, 609 were from Salt Lake County, 443 from Utah County, 212 from Davis County, 139 from Weber or Morgan County, and 100 from the southwestern Utah District, including St. George. Other health districts in Utah saw smaller surges.

As of Sunday, 564 Utahns have been hospitalized and 207 are in intensive care due to Covid-19. In the past week, the state has an average of 2,354 new confirmed cases per day and a positive testing percentage of 21.4.

State leaders did not hold a coronavirus news conference over the weekend, but it is expected to do so this weekend; Conventions usually take place on Wednesdays or Thursdays. Gov. Gary Herbert is entering the final weeks of his long-running administration facing the biggest challenges of his political life, and has implemented a statewide mask order to stem the tide of the virus.

Based on the state’s coronavirus health guidance system, or “transmission index,” the state’s three counties – Daggate, Pite and Rich – are at “high” transmission levels and are expected to take precautions to limit expected social gatherings to 10. People or less and end and bar and restaurant alcohol sales at 10 p.m.

Spencer Cox elected by the government Said on Tuesday “There’s real evidence that the changes we’ve all made over the last 2 weeks are making a difference,” refer to the Mask Order and the time limit on extraordinary school activities and socializing with people outside one’s home.

But he said “this plateau and potential recession could be completely reversed by large Thanksgiving gatherings.” There was a coronavirus spike in 2020 after holidays like Memorial Day and Labor Day – and the state could vaguely afford this at the moment, as coronavirus is higher than before it was admitted to hospital and hospitals warn of the potential for stress.

It remains to be seen how Thanksgiving will affect Utah’s case counts, if not all. Sunday’s case count is the lowest since Nov. 3, but relatively few tests have been reported.

State leaders announced last week that Utahns who do not show symptoms of the coronavirus can now schedule a test, if desired, by visiting testutah.com. The state previously had limited testing only for people with symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat or muscle aches.

Test results now include data from PCR tests and antigen tests. Positive COVID-19 test results are reported to the health department immediately after confirmation, but negative test results cannot be reported for 24 to 72 hours.

The total number of cases reported daily by the Utah Department of Health includes all cases of Covid-19 since the Utah outbreak, including those currently infected, recovering from the disease, and dying.

Definition of a case that was re-overed Anyone who was diagnosed with Covid-19 three or more weeks ago and did not die.

Deaths reported by the state usually occur two to seven days before their report, according to the health department. Some deaths may be later, especially if the person is from Utah but has died in another state.

The Department of Health reports both confirmed and probable COVID-19 case deaths as defined by the Council State and Territorial Epidemiologist. Death counts may change once case investigation is completed.

For deaths reported as Covid-19 deaths, according to the Department of Health, if the person did not have Covid-19, the person would not have died.
