MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – Wisconsin added 507 new coronavirus patients to its pandemic response, while other trends showed improvement, including a milestone for negative COVID-19 test results in the state Department of Health Services report Monday.
The state received 8,167 test results in the past 24-hour period, continuing with a trend of less than 10,000 test results on Sunday and Monday. Of these, 6.21% were positive, the second straight day that percentage fell. Health officials want that percentage below 5% – and ideally below 3% – as an indicator that the spread of coronavirus is under control; it was twice below 5% last week.
To date, more than 1 million people in Wisconsin test negative for COVID-19 (1,001,402). The state says that every person who has taken one or more swab tests has only been included in results once, indicating that more than 1 in 6 people in the state have been tested. Recently, health organizations announced plans to reduce testing due to limited number of testing supplies.

The state says 15.4% of these patients (9,383) are still considered active. The percentage of recovered cases has grown to 83%. Results can be very broad per province.

The state reports 31 more COVID-19 patients were hospitalized in the past 24 hours. To date, 5,031 COVID-19 patients have been admitted to treatment hospital at some point, as 8.2% of all cases. Currently, there are 352 patients in hospitals, including 98 in ICUs, and another 169 suspected COVID-19 patients awaiting test results.
In terms of hospital readiness, the state reports that 23% of beds are available at licensed medical facilities, slightly better than 22% yesterday, but this range has now been in the low 20s for a while.
There are 341 patients on mechanical ventilators for COVID-19 and other diseases. The state hospitals still have nearly 2,000 ventilators available.
The state Health Care Emergency Readiness Coalition also reports 8% of people in Wisconsin infected with the coronavirus were health care workers, including 9% in the Fox Valley area. The figures do not show how many of these cases are still active.

Prevention
- The coronavirus is a new, “novel,” virus. No one has a natural immunity to it. Children and teens seem to recover best from the virus. Elderly people and those with underlying health conditions (heart disease, diabetes, lung disease) are considered high risk, according to the CDC. Precautions are also needed to help people with developmental disorders such as weakened immune systems.
- To prevent the spread of the virus:
- Stay at least six feet away from other people
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick or like
- Stay home as much as possible
- Cancel events and avoid groups, meetings, game dates and non-essential events
- Stay home when you are sick unless you receive medical attention
- Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol
- Cover your mouth and nose with a mask. Use at least one tissue when coughing or sneezing or using the inside of your elbow.
