Summary:

  • Today 13 new deaths were reported, bringing the state total to 878. In the past seven days, a total of 47 people have died or an average of just under seven per day.
  • 1,052 new positive tests for COVID-19 brings the state total to 45,899. The seven-day moving average for new cases is 896.
  • An emerging access point could be Waukesha County, which averages 40 new cases per day two weeks ago and now has an average of less than 100 new cases per day.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported 1,052 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state in the past 24 hours. Milwaukee County represented about 40% of all cases with 420 new since yesterday.

It is important to note that the positive impact of the mask command, which has been in effect for one week, may not show in the data for another week.

Darren Rausch, the Greenfield Health Department Public Health Officer, explained at a press conference Thursday afternoon that it will be difficult to see what impact the mask’s mandate has on future infections due to all the variables involved. And even if there is a positive impact, it probably won’t be noticed until next week. Currently, municipalities within Milwaukee County with a mask mandate are: Milwaukee, Glendale, Shorewood, and Whitefish Bay.

The state health department reports that there are a total of 9,504 active cases in the state. The patient has recovered in approximately 77% of all cases (35,502 cases). Patients who are considered recovered no longer exhibit COVID-19 symptoms or it has been 30 days since they tested positive. In the remaining 878 cases, the patient has died.

Above, we have removed the five largest counties by population to see how cases in those locations have evolved compared to the rest of the state.

Due to fluctuations in day-to-day testing, we look at a moving average over the past seven days to get a better idea of the case trend. That seven-day moving average is 896 new cases per day for the entire state.

A data collection problem in Wisconsin’s electronic records system prevented an accurate count of ICU hospitalizations and patients for today.

The labs processed a total of 15,264 tests in the last day. The state has averaged about 12,000 tests in the past two weeks.

The state currently can handle a capacity of 24,156 tests a day spread across 83 laboratories. An additional 24 labs are being addressed.

Due to fluctuations in inbound test results, it really isn’t worth paying close attention to daily percentage positive results other than detecting high or low test rate abnormalities. Instead, let’s take a look at the averages of seven (orange dots) and 14 days (gray dots). As you can see, both time frames show an upward trend in the last month.

Anyone who wants a test should be able to get it, either from their primary care physician or from one of several community testing sites. If you have any of these symptoms, it is recommended to get tested. Here are your options:

As is still the case, the best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to limit time in public places where you could be exposed to people outside your home. If you need to be in public, practice social distancing (more than 6 feet space between you and other people), wear a mask or face covering when possible, and practice good hygiene (wash your hands after any exhibition event).
