Wisconsin Daily Update COVID-19: Increase in New Cases Continues in the State

The City of Milwaukee is moving to Phase 4 of its reopening plans beginning at 12:01 am on Wednesday, July 1. The decision to advance to Phase 4 was announced on Friday, June 26.

Meanwhile, after Tuesday morning’s call by dozens of local businesses for the city to enact a mandatory mask requirement in public spaces, Councilwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, chairwoman of the Common Council’s Safety and Public Health Committee, introduced a proposal that would do exactly that by modeling a similar policy in Los Angeles.

The proposal will be discussed during the meeting of the Public Health and Safety Committee on Thursday and could be presented to the entire Common Council on Tuesday, July 7.

According to the Masks4All site, Wisconsin is one of four states with no state or local mask policies.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reports 601 new positive tests for COVID-19, bringing the state total to 28,659. Today’s total is the second highest number of new cases in a day since the pandemic began on May 29 alone, which had 733 new cases.

Almost 80% of the 28,659 cases were considered recovered (22,587). The number of active cases is currently 5,284. This is until yesterday and represents 18% of all cases. Patients who are considered recovered no longer exhibit COVID-19 symptoms or it has been 30 days since they tested positive. In the remaining 784 cases, the patient has died.

Seven new deaths were reported in the state, bringing the total number of deaths to 784. Milwaukee County has the highest number of deaths of all counties with 390. Other counties with more than 30 deaths are Racine (63), Kenosha (43), Brown (42), Waukesha (38), and Dane (32).

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 has hovered around 240 statewide in the past two weeks. With this latest increase in new cases, you can expect to see these data appear in the number of hospitalizations. However, as previously reported, the current increase in cases is largely concentrated among younger individuals, specifically between the ages of 20 and 29.

This age group is hospitalized in approximately 3% of cases, while the general population is hospitalized in 12% of cases.

We saw a new big wave of tests processed on the last day with 12,781 new tests. Usually, positive tests are archived and reported first, followed by negative ones, so generally when a large number of tests are reported, there are many negatives. The state currently can handle a capacity of 18,425 tests a day spread across 75 laboratories. An additional 29 laboratories are being addressed. In the past week, we’ve seen just over 9,200 tests per day.

Anyone who wants a test should be able to get it, either from their primary care physician or from one of several community testing sites. If you have any of these symptoms, it is recommended to get tested. Here are your options:

As is still the case, the best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to limit time in public places where you could be exposed to people outside your home. If you need to be in public, practice social distancing (more than 6 feet space between you and other people), wear a mask or face covering when possible, and practice good hygiene (wash your hands after any exhibition event).
