Surprise! Microsoft today released a set of features from the Windows 10 Insider Preview beta development channel (20H2). That means they will arrive in a shipping version of Windows 10 much faster than many previously expected.
As you probably know, the Windows 10 Insider Preview Dev channel (formerly called Fast ring) isn’t tied to a particular version of Windows 10. And the thought so far has been that any features tested there would ship in the Windows 10 version. after the next version, which means 21H1 right now, at the earliest.
But when Microsoft started testing what it calls “theme-aware tiles” on the Start menu in the Dev channel, I described this change as more than subtle. In fact, it was so less than later I speculated that this feature could be easily shipped earlier, in Windows 10 version 20H2. Although being on the Dev channel suggested it might not show up until 9:11 or later.
Well that’s happening: Theme Recognition tiles are among Windows 10 features that were previously only on the Dev channel that Microsoft just added to the Beta channel (20H2). Others include ALT + TAB support for Microsoft Edge tabs, improved taskbar pins for Microsoft Edge, and the so-called programmable taskbar.
But wait, there’s more: Microsoft is also improving the Windows 10 notification experience, making minor tweaks to Settings, improving the new tablet experience that debuted in Windows 10 version 2004 in subtle ways, and adding new modern device management. for Local Users and Groups (MDM) for system administrators.
Given the moment, as pointed out last week, the 20H2 version of Windows 10 is accelerating towards its final version, I must assume that this list of changes constitutes everything new in this next version.
You know, unless they surprise us next week.
