Windows 10 May 2020 update may falsely report no internet connection

Some people who have upgraded to Windows 10 version 2004 (or Windows 10 May 2020 update) are experiencing a strange problem with their internet connections.

A problem has occurred with the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) found on the taskbar. Affected users complain that the icon indicates that there is no Internet connection available and that Microsoft cannot explain what is happening.

As reported by Günter Born, this is different than Internet connectivity issues that caused problems for VPN users. Even though Windows 10 informs users that their internet connection isn’t working, it actually does exactly what it should. As Windows 10 issues go, this is a minor one.

On TechNet, Microsoft explains the problem:

Symptom:

Clients report that there is no Internet access in the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) on Windows 10 2004 devices on devices that can actually ping Internet resources or browse websites with Internet browsers.

Current situation:

Microsoft knows about this problem but has not yet resolved it.

It is currently being investigated by Microsoft.

So once again, we’ll have to wait to see when Microsoft managed to diagnose the problem and find a solution, although even if the problem does affect it, it’s more of an inconvenience than a real problem.
