As mentioned, Meredith and Andrew split in Grey’s Anatomy Season 16. Throughout the season, the surgical resident struggles with his mental health. When Meredith confronted her friend about his behavior, he ended the relationship.

“I do not need this and I do not need you,” he said. “That we are ready.”

A few episodes later, Meredith told DeLuca that they were still holding him, and hinted that things were not really over between the two. However, the romance took a back seat to DeLuca’s storytelling about mental health. Then in the Grey’s Anatomy final broke DeLuca down for Meredith after rescuing Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.).

“I don’t know what’s going on,” DeLuca said, crying as Meredith got to his feet and brought him home.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight published in August 2020, Gianniotti revealed DeLuca’s mental health story will “continue to be explored” in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17. The actor has also indicated that his character is trying to improve with Meredith.

“I think this season will have a lot of DeLuca trying to make up for his wrongdoing, things he said, things he did because he’s unstable,” Gianniotti said. “And Meredith, try to reconcile that or not.”

That said, McWidow will still weigh in on Meredith’s heart. Gianniotti suggested that the new character is in it for the long term, since Flood was recently cast after a series of regulars.

“I think it’s something we’re still interested in,” Gianniotti said. “We still want to play that. It’s fun to watch. That’s why they [promoted] him to seriously. That we could really have him for a while and really tell that story – and not have to tell it in a short amount of time. But do a season like that to tell that. ”

Talking to Entertainment Tonight, Gianniotti delves deeper into the love triangle between McWidow, Meredith, and DeLuca on Grey’s Anatomy.

‘In the beginning … I think it was clear [DeLuca] had a hard time getting his foot in the door in that triangle, ”Gianniotti said. “And in the end, because of DeLuca’s mental health, he did not really have any major benefits for himself or for Meredith in terms of their relationship.”

The actor also pointed out that this character of Flood caused “much more desirable and stable and more of a compatible partner.” Although it seems that Gianniotti is of the opinion that Meredith and Andrew could still make a good match Grey’s Anatomy Season 17.
