Wildfires force evacuations in Santa Cruz Mountains near Boulder Creek


Cal Fire on Tuesday night extended its evacuation orders for communities in Santa Cruz County near Boulder Creek due to activity for fireworks.

Word came down at 7:30 a.m. for residents along Waterman Gap Loop, Upper 236, Boulder Creek Golf Course, Heartwood Hill, Lodge Road, Little Basin and Kings Highway community, Lower and Upper China Grade, Lower Jamison Creek, Gallon Heights , near Fallen Leaf and Foxglove Lane, to turn south on Highway 236 toward Boulder Creek before heading on Highway 9 south to Santa Cruz.

Residents along Saratoga Toll Road, San Lorenzo Park, Riverside Grove Community of Teilh Drive and Wildwood Road had to evacuate north on Highway 9 toward Santa Clara County.

Officials had called earlier in the evening for evacuations in southern San Mateo County.

In a statement, Cal Fire officials said the fires, called the CZU August Lightning Complex, had grown to about 1,000 acres with zero percent occupancy starting at 5:45 p.m.
