Why you should download your iPhone and iPad applications

If you’re always running out of storage space on your iPhone or iPad, a built-in feature called download can free something up. It will also not lose any of its settings, which is why most people find automatic download ideal.

What is the download?

Download is an Apple-specific term that means deleting program data from an application, but keeping all documents or settings associated with it on your device.

After downloading an application, you can download it again and it will work the same as before. For example, saved game data or documents you created in a word processing application will stay right where you left them.

On iPhone or iPad, you can download applications one at a time or enable automatic download of unused ones. When apps are downloaded, their icons remain on the home screen, but you’ll see a small iCloud download icon next to their names.

When you tap the icon for a downloaded app, it will automatically download from the App Store, as long as it’s available and your device is connected to the Internet.

When should you download?

If you have an Apple device with a relatively low amount of storage space, such as a 32GB iPad, and still stumbling over the storage limit, downloading apps is a great idea. Automatic download will free up a lot of space. Also, since it only removes unused apps, you probably never notice that those apps are no longer installed.

How to download applications manually

To manually download apps one at a time, open “Settings” and then tap General> iPhone Storage (or General> iPad Storage on an iPad).

There, you will see a list of all installed apps sorted by size. Touch the one you want to download. On the next screen, tap “Download app”.

Tap

The application will be downloaded. If you ever need it again, just tap its icon on the home screen and it will download automatically.

How to automatically download unused applications

To activate automatic download, tap “Settings” and then “App Store” (or “iTunes and App Store” on certain versions of iOS and iPadOS). Scroll down and activate “Download unused applications”.

Activate

Give your device time to decide which unused apps to download. Depending on the amount you download, the process may take a few minutes or more. When you come back later, you should have plenty of room to breathe to install new applications or work with documents.
