On Friday, the Las Vegas Raiders took their first steps on the field in their new home: Allegiant Stadium on the Strip – where the Kansas City Chiefs will play their AFC West Division opponents at least once a season for the upcoming time.
As they did so, the stadium’s speakers carried a message that was spoken by team owner Mark Davis, via ESPN.
“Welcome to the Death Star, where our opponents’ dreams die,” Davis said. ‘My father always said that the greatness of the Raiders is in the future. Well, today that future really begins. This magnificent stadium was built on the backs of thousands of players, coaches, managers and fans, who have proudly worn the Silver and the Black for the past 60 years. ”
In addition to the oddly mixed metaphor that combines elements from two completely different types of Hollywood movies – Star Wars: Episode IV en Field of dreams – Davis’ attempt to inspire his team with this imagination was … well … a little sad.
As almost every Jedi knows, the Death Star could only use his incredible power once: when he destroyed the planet Alderaan. Before it could destroy the rebel base on Dantooine Yavin 4, it was even destroyed by a rebel attack that concentrated on a weak point that was revealed by blueprints stolen from the Empire’s troops.
Of course … all this the happened a long time ago in a galaxy far away. Maybe Davis just forgot.
This time, the Death Star’s weak point will not be finding a rebellious princess and a cast of space-going heroes to spice up the stolen plans across the galaxy. We already to know what it is: a Chiefs flag buried under the new stadium.
And if that does not work … there’s always Patrick Mahomes. The Force is strong in that one.
See you in Week 11, Raiders.
