- There may not yet be a coronavirus vaccine, but it is incredibly important to get a flu shot this year. The flu season will overlap with the COVID-19 pandemic, making matters worse.
- The World Health Organization made it clear during a press conference that the COVID-19 pandemic is “a big wave,” not a seasonal illness like the flu.
- Without containing COVID-19 first, countries may have trouble fighting the new coronavirus and the flu.
- The WHO advises people to seek flu vaccines as the flu season begins during the southern hemisphere winter.
The new coronavirus pandemic is well out of control as the world is experiencing a massive increase in cases. Some regions have successfully flattened the curve, while others are experiencing waves that are even worse than the April peaks. Some refer to the resurgence as “a second peak” of the first COVID-19 wave, while others call it “a second wave.” But no matter what you call it, it’s clear that the virus doesn’t care about the season.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has just released the worst possible news about COVID-19 to the world ahead of the upcoming flu season. The pandemic is “a big wave”, it is not seasonal. And that could be a big problem in the coming months as flu cases start to pile up in addition to COVID-19.
WHO officials avoided labeling the resurgence of COVID-19 in places like Hong Kong and other countries that experienced more cases as a “wave.” Calling these outbreaks “waves” suggests that the virus is behaving in ways beyond human control, Reuters notes, but human action can delay the spread.
“We are in the first wave. It will be a great wave. It’s going to go up and down a little bit. It is best to flatten it and make it something that licks your feet, ”said Margaret Harris of WHO during a virtual meeting in Geneva.
“People are still thinking about the seasons,” he said, noting the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the United States during the summer. “What we all need to understand is that this is a new virus and … it behaves differently.”
“Summer is a problem. This virus likes all weather, “said Harris. The famous President Trump said in the first months of the pandemic that the virus will disappear when warmer weather arrives, but that has not happened. At the time, we already had evidence that the virus could survive in warmer climates when it reached the southern hemisphere. The research that followed showed that SARS-CoV-2 is not like flu viruses when it comes to heat.
The flu comes in waves as it is a seasonal infectious disease. Harris expressed concern about COVID-19 which coincides with the normal flu season during the southern hemisphere winter. Flu season is about to start, and we’ll get a preview of what it will look like in the Northern Hemisphere in addition to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Laboratory samples so far have not shown a large number of flu cases, suggesting a later-than-normal start to the flu season for the southern hemisphere.
“If you have an increase in respiratory disease when you already have a very high burden of respiratory disease, that puts even more pressure on the health system,” Harris said, urging people to seek flu vaccines. A coronavirus vaccine may be ready by mid-fall, although the general public may not have it until several months after 2021.
