Whitmer met with Biden when he made the VP decision: AP

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer traveled to Delaware last weekend to meet with Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate’s first known personal session with a potential running mate, when he makes a decision.

Whitmer visited Biden Sunday, according to two senior Michigan Democrats who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. The first-term governor of the battlefield state was long on his short list of possible running mates.

The governor’s office refused to confirm or deny the trip.

“We are not discussing her personal scheme,” said spokeswoman Tiffany Brown.

Biden’s campaign declined to comment.

He has spent months serving whoever would serve next to him if he wins in November. Biden has promised to select a woman and has conducted an extensive search, including Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, California Rep. Karen Bass and former Obama National Security Adviser Susan Rice.

Biden opposes calls to select a Black woman to recognize her important role in Democratic politics and in response to the nation’s reckoning with systematic racism.

Whitmer has sought to address racism and racial inequality. In April, she created a task force to address the racial differences of the pandemic and later proposed policing in the wake of George Floyd’s death. On Wednesday – days after Biden’s visit – she declared racism a public health crisis, created an advisory board of Black leaders and demanded implicit bias training for all state workers.

If Whitmer is chosen to participate in the ticket and Biden wins, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II became the sole Black governor of the country.

Biden and Whitmer formed a bond after running for their campaign in the 2018 gubernatorial election. She is a co-chair of his campaign.

Her profile has grown since her Democrats’ response to the president’s address to President Donald Trump and especially in the midst of the pandemic. She has taken aggressive steps to curb the coronavirus in a state that was a hot spot in the country early on – and – after criticizing the federal response – has drawn criticism from Trump, who in March led Vice President Mike Pence to not “to call the woman into Michigan.”
